Catoctin Creek Distillery

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company was founded in 2009 by the husband and wife team of Becky and Scott Harris. Both successful engineers, Becky and Scott decided to embark on a new professional path together that would connect them to the scenic landscape of home in northern Virginia’s Loudoun Valley. The couple shared the desire to make something by hand that would honor the agrarian character of their surroundings in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as the heritage of distilling in Virginia.

Now at Catoctin Creek, the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition, they’re using local and organic ingredients to produce a variety of small-batch craft spirits, including the flagship Roundstone Rye, which holds distinction as Virginia’s most-awarded whisky. With Scott running business operations and Becky focused on the art of crafting the finest spirits in the Commonwealth as chief distiller, the couple leads a small team of employees that are proudly making a variety high-quality products in an historic building in the quaint downtown of Purcellville, Virginia. Operating from a former a Buick dealership built in 1921, the building has been outfitted with a 41kWh solar power system, which provides 85 percent of the distillery’s electrical usage.

Catoctin Creek’s whisky is distilled from 100-percent organic rye that is sourced locally. Becky and Scott chose to focus on the grain to honor the history of whisky in Virginia, where it was used to make spirits in the earliest days of American settlement. Distilled with time-honored methods, Catoctin Creek’s spirits have a distinctive taste that can only come from the terroir of the pastoral landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills. Becky is focused on making young, single-barrel whisky with bold flavors balanced by characteristics of both the wood and grain. During the aging process, which lasts up to two years in a barn not far from the distillery, the northern Virginia climate helps pull different flavors from the Minnesota white oak casks, as temperature and humidity in the region varies from day to day and season to season. More flavor comes from the rich mineral content of Catoctin’s water source, a reservoir fed by rainwater runoff from the nearby Appalachian Mountains.
