The story of Copper Fox Distillery begins many years ago with how much our founder, Rick Wasmund loved the aroma of burning wood, his discovery that he wanted something that did not exist and the revelation that he could make a great American Single Malt Whisky! As a kid, he was in charge of collecting firewood and building the campfires on family camping trips. Later, he became more aware of the aromatic properties of different woods and the different flavors of wood smoke when used for grilling. When he was a little older, he discovered whisky tasting events with his dad, and fell in love with Scotch Whisky; especially the peaty kind, partly because of the smell of the smoked peat and partly because of the richness of the malted barley. Following his whisky instincts, he predicted that barley flavored with fruitwood smoke would taste even better! He began to search for a flavor that he soon discovered did not exist.
Unable to find fruitwood-smoked whisky anywhere on the planet, Rick decided he must learn floor malting so he could create it himself. This led him to Scotland and an internship at Bowmore Distillery where he bunked in a barn and learned the traditional art of floor malting barley. Upon his return from Scotland, he searched for a location to open a distillery and invited family and friends to invest in his dream. The Sperryville location is a converted cider mill constructed by the Rappahannock Co-operative Fruit Growers in 1936 and sits on the banks of the Thornton River in the spectacular foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2005 it became home to the first distillery in North America to build a malt floor and kiln post- Prohibition.
After his first brilliant idea, Rick continued to innovate. He revolutionized the aging process by experimenting with both new and toasted fruitwood chips in the barrels, a completely new concept. He found that apple wood and oak wood were the perfect combination for his flagship Single Malt Whisky, and much later on he discovered that peach wood and oak wood were fantastic for the Peachwood Single Malt Whisky. This unique aging process is essential to the flavor and quality of our spirits. CF started out as a small family operation with just Rick, his mother Helen, (the distillery “M.O.M”- Manager of Malt) and Rick’s partner Sean, managing all aspects of production and sales for the first seven years. With a growing need for additional malting, distilling and storage capacity, Rick purchased the former Lord Paget Motor Inn complex from the City of Williamsburg in March 2015. Since acquiring the property in 2015, 6 of the 9 buildings have been converted for distillery operations and opened to the public for distillery tours, tastings, events and retail sales in July 2016. Renovation to the remaining three buildings is in progress. We malt, distill, age and bottle all of our products at our distilleries in Sperryville and Williamsburg.
