Front Royal, featuring KO and James River Distilleries

Beth’s special September cocktail “Front Royal” features two #VaSpirits: KO Distilling Battle Standard Navy Strength Gin and James River Distillery Øster Vit. Beth carries a sizable amount of #VaSpirits behind the bar.

INGREDIENTS
1 oz. of KO Distilling Battle Standard Navy Strength Gin
1 oz. of James River Distillery Øster Vit
½ oz. of Black Locust vinegar
½ oz. of lemon
½ oz. of simple syrup

PREPARATION
Shaken, strained over large ice cube in a rox glass with a twist of lemon

The Tennyson Martini, featuring KO Distilling

The Tennyson is named after Frank Tennyson, one of Mama J’s regulars who passed away unexpectedly this year. Frank sat at their bar at least four or five times a week and was considered family.

INGREDIENTS
2 oz. KO Distilling Battle Standard Navy Strength Gin
1/2 oz. Dry Vermouth
Splash of Tonic Water
Cucumber slices

PREPARATION
Stir or shake the gin, vermouth and tonic in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Make a slit in cucumber and run around the rim and drop it in.

INGREDIENTS
0.5 oz. of James River Commonwealth Gin
0.5 oz. Lemon Juice
0.5 oz. Triple Sec
0.5 oz. Cocchi Americano
1 splash of Absinthe

PREPARATION
Instructions: Chill a martini glass. Build cocktail in a shaker tin. Shake and strain into an absinthe rinsed glass. Enjoy!

Catoctin Royal, featuring Catoctin Creek

This delicious cocktail is the prefect cooler for a summer afternoon into evening. Aperitif Wine, Black Currents and Champagne blend and compliment Catoctin Creek’s Watershed Gin.

INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz Catoctin Creek Watershed Gin
1 oz Cocchi Americano Rosa
.5 oz Creme de Bourgogne Nivernaise (Cassis)
3 oz Champagne

PREPARATION
Combine Gin, Rosa & Cassis into a mixing glass full of ice and stir. Pour into a highball with ice (or an ice baton). Top with Champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Commonwealth Rickey, featuring James River Distillery

A gin rickey is a classic cocktail that is light and refreshing and perfect for a hot humid Virginia evening.

INGREDIENTS
2 oz Commonwealth Gin
1 oz lime juice soda water

PREPARATION
Build ingredients into a mixing glass, add ice, shake vigorously, strain over fresh ice in a glass, top with soda water. Stir gently. Garnish with a lime peel and lime wedge

Gin and Juice, featuring James River Distillery

Cool off with Chef John’s innovative Gin and Juice, featuring Commonwealth Gin. It’s one of our favorite drinks for a hot, summer day in Virginia.

INGREDIENTS
2.5 oz. Commonwealth Gin
1/2 oz. kalamansi lime
1/2 oz. ginger juice
2 oz. blood orange juice (or blood orange concentrate with fresh squeezed orange juice)
½ oz. 1-1 hibiscus syrup
5 drops of Grains of Paradise Tincture (infused gin with grains of paradise and lemon peel) 

PREPARATION
Add all ingredients into a soda siphon and carbonate for at least 20 minutes. Dispense over large ice cube and garnish with orange peel.

Bramblin’ Man, featuring Catoctin Creek

The Bramblin’ Man came to be after finding some amazing blackberries at our local farmers market. With blackberry cordial as the centerpiece of this cocktail, we use Catoctin Creek gin for its exceptionally floral notes as a foundation. Then we acidify and add a touch of violet sweetness, and round it out with a hit of absinthe and bitters for a boozy, fruity kick. Prosecco adds the effervescence and dryness to make this cocktail a perfect patio sipper.

INGREDIENTS
2 oz Catoctin Creek Watershed Gin
0.75 oz Blackberry Cordial
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
0.25 oz Creme de Violette
1 Dash Absinthe
1 Dash Peach Bitters
1 oz Prosecco
1 Sprig of Thyme (For Garnish)

PREPARATION
Combine all ingredients except Prosecco in a shaker and shake over ice. Double strain into a chilled coupe and top with prosecco. Garnish with sprig of thyme.

Waterloo, featuring James River Distillery

We name all of our drinks after places in Virginia, ‘Waterloo’ just seemed to fit! 🙂 I made the Watermelon shrub with Lindera Farms Honey vinegar, after tasting it I knew it would pair well with gin and something bitter. The classic London Dry style Continental Gin adds nice botanicals without overwhelming the watermelon.

INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz. Continental Gin
.25 oz. Campari
1 oz. Watermelon/Honey Vinegar Shrub
Soda

PREPARATION
In mixing tins, add Gin, Campari and shrub, plus one scoop ice. Shake, Pour into Collins, top with soda. Garnish with lime wheel.

Eau Verte Fizz, featuring James River Distillery

This french summer inspired highball is a fantastic option on a balmy afternoon. The sweetness of the gin complement the tartness of the verjus and the briny-ness of the sherry. To round it out we add some cucumber juice to lend a floral and herbaceous hand.

INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz Commonwealth Gin
0.75 oz Verjus
0.5 oz Fino Sherry
0.5 oz 1:1 Simple Syrup
0.75 oz Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Cucumber Juice
2 oz Sparkling Water Cucumber ribbon for garnish

PREPARATION
Combine ingredients in highball or collins glass and fill with ice. Skewer cucumber ribbon and add a straw.
